June/July Travels 2023 Part 3 - Pacific NW

We left Turlock, CA on Sunday, June 25th and drove to the Mt Shasta area.  We were fortunate to find a beautiful campsite for the evening.

I made baked potatoes with chili, served with fruit.

Check out the chimney for the fire!

Learning to whistle

Preparing to bathe in the cold river.

Feeling invigorated!

That evening half of us slept in the tent and the other half slept in the van.

The next morning we started hiking a trail on Mount Shasta but realized it was too covered in snow and we wanted to head to our next location.

We found another hike along our route that was much warmer and led to a waterfall.

The water was quite cold!

Christian had multiple attempts at getting into the waterfall before he succeeded.

We found a campsite that evening that had lots of pinecones but not many trees.

The next day we drove to Crater Lake and enjoyed a hike along the rim.

Stunning Crater Lake

We then drove north toward Mt Hood.  We found the most beautiful camping site!

In the morning we took another stroll, packed up camp ...

...and headed to enjoy Lost Lake, near Mt. Hood.  We found another excellent camp site!
We rented kayaks, a paddle board and then a fishing pole for Christian to try his luck.

No luck!  But we did catch the tree a few times. :)

Here is some fun in the van.  Pretty entertaining!

That evening we enjoyed the campfire again, slept at the camp, and the next morning were able to get showers.  We then headed to Seattle.  The drive through Oregon was beautiful!

Our friends, the Carrolls live near Seattle.  Matt grew up with Travis and we were both young couples at BYU.  We had our first children around the same time.  It was so fun to reconnect after 18 years!  Matt and Travis were able to climb Mt. Ranier, (14,417 ft) at the summit.  I enjoyed my time with Melissa and the kids.
The first evening we went to the town lake and the kids kayaked and paddle boarded.  The guys finished preparing and went to bed for an early start in the morning.

The next day we went to the coast not far from their home.

Saturday July 1st we played games and went back to the lake.  The kids hit it off and Melissa and I reconnected seamlessly.  I loved spending time with her!

That evening Sheri and I went to the Charlie Puth concert in the area.

That evening the kids stayed up late talking and playing trying to squeeze in every last minute with their new friends.  Meanwhile Matt and Travis arrived safely home from their adventure on Mt. Ranier.

The first day they hiked up to base camp to allow them to acclimate as well as to allow them to sleep and begin their climb to the summit at midnight.  There is less chance of glacier melt, and greater stability with the footing when climbing at night.

Matt didn't admit it to Travis, but had a broken thumb before coming. Somehow he managed to work through it.

There were crevasses on the climb so the group stayed tied together and practiced arresting a fall.  Here a small board lays over a crack in the glacier.

We all breathed a sigh of relief when everyone made it home safely and not too sick from the altitude changes.  Matt was pretty stiff and sore for a while but was quite happy to have summited.  Now he can check that off his bucket list.

Matt flew back to Texas on Sunday, July 2nd and the kids and I said goodbye and drove to Logan, Utah, making our way back home a little at a time.
I'll write more about that in my next post.

June was about as packed with awesomeness as it could be!  Trek, YM/YW camp, FSY, Colorado, Utah, California, Oregon, Washington, family, friends, camping, mountains, ocean, sunshine, the Pacific Northwest...and now on to July!
